What is professional ear cleaning?

Professional ear wax cleaning is the safe removal of built-up earwax (cerumen) by an ENT specialist, using proper instruments and direct visualization. It relieves blocked ears, muffled hearing, and discomfort, and avoids the damage that cotton buds can cause by pushing wax deeper.

Earwax is normal and usually clears on its own, but in some people it builds up and blocks the ear canal, causing muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, mild discomfort, or ringing. Professional ear cleaning removes this wax safely, with the ENT looking directly into the ear canal and using the right instruments, rather than blindly with a cotton bud, which often pushes wax deeper and can injure the canal or eardrum.

It is a simple, common reason to see an ENT and is one of the most frequent services at the clinic.

Risks & What to Discuss with Your Surgeon

Ear cleaning is very safe when done by an ENT who can see the ear canal directly. Doing it yourself with cotton buds, tools, or ear candles is what causes most problems: impacted wax, scratches, or eardrum injury. If you have ear pain, discharge, bleeding, or sudden hearing changes, these need proper evaluation, not just cleaning. Your ENT will check the health of the ear during the visit.
